Meet the Team: Q&A with Dan Otten

It’s time for our another Q&A session with an amazing member of the Select Surfaces team! Meet our Vice President, Dan. Keep reading to learn more about how Dan got his start in the industry, how he serves our clients, and what he loves about being part of the Select Surfaces team.

1. What is your job title?
Vice President

2. What do you do for your clients?
Everything I can to ensure they receive the best end result through hiring the right personnel, training & continuing education for the production team. I do also still take on the
role of Project Manager from time to time.

3. What’s your education and/or work background?
My countertop background started off fabricating Solid Surface countertops at the age of 12 with my brother, Derrick. Coming from a family of 13 siblings & most of them being in the construction industry, there was always the opportunity for hands-on learning after school or on the weekends. After graduating high school I jumped head first into the remodeling industry working my way up to master carpenter before joining the team at Select Surfaces in 2001.

4. What do you like to do in your free time?
Spending time with my 3 daughters, being outdoors – mountain biking, snowboarding, wakeboarding, running,
hiking.

snowboarding

5. What’s your favorite current design trend?
Contemporary. I love seeing the mixture of stone, metal & wood throughout the beautiful homes we get to work in.

6. Do you have any pets?
Not at the moment. However, I grew up with horses, ducks, chickens, goats & a few other odd ‘pets’ on the farm. As an adult I have had two dogs (Shepherd/Husky/Wolf mix & Black Lab/Rottweiler mix) & also had a
Patternless Albino Burmese Python that made it to about 10’ before passing.

7. What is your favorite part of the day?
Early in the morning with coffee & a good mind-opening book, the quiet before the storm.

8. What is your ideal vacation?
I don’t think it matters whether it is warm, cold, wet or dry. It’s more about who the time is spent with.

9. Tell me something unique about yourself.
I’m kid #8 of 13

10. Do you have a favorite local brewery?
Surly

11. What time does your alarm go off in the morning?
5 AM

12. Ski or snowboard…or sledding?
Definitely snowboarding. Strapped a snowboard on my feet in high school & haven’t touched skis since.

Thanks to Dan for sharing a little about himself with us and for being such a valuable member of our team. We love telling you about our team, so be on the lookout for future Q&A sessions with more of our favorite people!
