If you’re ready to upgrade your kitchen countertops, the first step is getting a clear and accurate quote. The good news is that you don’t need complicated tools or perfect measurements to get started. With just a few simple items, you can quickly gather the information our team needs to prepare a detailed estimate for your project.
Here’s how to do it.
What You’ll Need
Before you begin, gather a few basic items:
- A cell phone to take photos
- A piece of paper
- A pencil
- A tape measure
That’s it. These simple tools will help you capture the key information needed to start your countertop estimate.

Step 1: Take Photos of Your Kitchen
Start by taking several photos of your kitchen or the area where the countertops will be replaced.
Try to include:
- Wide photos showing the entire kitchen
- Close-ups of sink areas or cooktops
- Photos of your island, if you have one
- Any backsplash areas
These photos help our team understand the layout and identify important details that may affect your project.

Step 2: Draw the General Shape of Your Countertops
Next, draw a simple outline of your countertop layout on a piece of paper.
Don’t worry about making it perfect. The goal is simply to show the general shape and sections of the countertops. For example:
- Straight runs of cabinets
- L-shaped or U-shaped counters
- Island surfaces
- Peninsula sections
This drawing gives our estimating team a clear starting point.

Step 3: Measure Each Section
Using your tape measure, document the length and depth of each countertop section.
Typical measurements include:
- Length of each counter run
- Standard countertop depth (usually around 25–26 inches)
- Island length and width
- Backsplash height and length
If you have a unique layout, additional measurements are always helpful. The more details you provide, the more accurate your estimate can be.

Step 4: Measure the Backsplash Area (simply repeat steps 2 & 3)
If you’re planning a backsplash update, new tile, or slab, include measurements for that area as well.
Be sure to note:
- The height of the backsplash
- The total length of walls where the backsplash will be installed
- Note the approximate location of windows, the range hood, and outlets
Whether you’re considering tile or a slab backsplash, these measurements help us include those options in your quote.
Step 5: Note Any Unique Project Details
Every kitchen is a little different, so it’s helpful to include any additional information about your plans.
For example:
- Do you need help removing existing countertops or backsplash?
- Would you like Select Surfaces to disconnect and reconnect the sink and faucet?
- Have you budgeted for a new sink and faucet?
- Would you like to add a new tile or slab backsplash?
- Are you considering a water filtration system and a dedicated faucet?
- Do you want any upgrade options, such as a thick edge or a waterfall panel?
Sharing these details helps ensure your estimate includes all the elements needed to complete the project.
